Josh, as a co-teacher of yours, I totally understand what you are saying here. I'm teaching at a fairly well-off suburban school now, and the same thing is happening, but because the kids are elementary it looks a bit different. The rich kids have less behavior problems, they seem happier over all in school. They get more support from their parents. And yes, many of them are taking private lessons an already know what I'm going to teach them before they show up to class (or they THINK they know...) Anyhow, I think what you are really trying to get at is to find out where art fits into economics. Look at the native peoples of the Pacific northwest. Their lives were much easier than the people of the desert southwest. It is no surprise which group had the better art and more elaborate and rich culture.

Also, it seems like there could be a question of: What is IMPORTANT music? All the Kodaly work I've been doing recently puts lots of weight on old American folk tunes like "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" and the like, This music is very important to the overall culture of America, but how do we compare it to Copeland? Should we? I have to admit, I have poo-pooed the lap dulcimer and songs with only 4 pitches many times, but I think I'm starting to see the light.

I think "art" has a much wider application than we often realize. Anything that pulls upon our creative nature to produce is, in some way, art. I've heard it said that every painting an artist does, no matter the subject, is a self portrait. The more freely and skillfully we become in the use of whatever our medium may be, the more transparent our "art" becomes, allowing the viewer to perceive something of our humanity.

I do think that what qualifies any thing as art is its ability to touch the soul or transcend. Just because something was written a while back doesn't automatically make it art. Similarly, just because something is written in the present doesn't disqualify it as art. For some reason, some people believe that music has to be old or follow a "classical" format to be considered art. Is this true? Or, do other forms of art struggle with the same questions?
